报告摘要:

The capability of manipulating micro and nanometer-sized objects, such as cells and nanomaterials opens new frontiers in robotic surgery, disease diagnostics, industrial applications and enables new discoveries in many disciplines such as biology, medicine, and materials science. The field of Micro-NanoRobotics includes the design and construction of robotic agents that are micro-nanometer sized and robotic manipulation of objects with dimensions in the micrometer and nanometer ranges. The past two decades has witnessed spurred development of micro-nanorobotic systems and technologies with common hallmarks of precision instrumentation, sensing, actuation, and control. Furthermore, the scaling of physical effects (e.g., low Reynold’s number and dominating surface forces) can make seemingly simple manipulation tasks challenging.

 

This presentation will provide an overview of challenges, opportunities, and recent advances made in the field of micro-nanorobotics. Characteristic sensing, actuation, control, and fabrication technologies will be introduced. Example micro-nanorobotic technologies developed for the assembly of micro-nano devices, in vivo medical therapy, single-cell surgery and characterization, and nanomanufacturing will be given. Significant advances have been made to date; however, the most exciting era of micro-nanorobotics is still ahead, and the greatest results in the field and impact to our society will emerge within the next decade. 

 

报告人简介:

Yu Sun is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, with joint appointments in the Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Toronto. He was elected Fellow of ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers), IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of Science), and CAE (Canadian Academy of Engineering) for his work on micro-nano devices and robotic systems.

 

He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in 2003 and did his postdoctoral research at ETH-Zürich. He is presently a McLean Senior Faculty Fellow at the University of Toronto and the Canada Research Chair in Micro and Nano Engineering Systems. In 2012-2013, he directed the University of Toronto Nanofabrication Center. Sun has served and serves on the editorial boards of several IEEE Transactions, J. Micromechanics Microengineering, Scientific Reports, and Microsystems & Nanoengineering. Among the awards he received were a dozen best paper awards and finalists at major conferences; five times University of Toronto Connaught Innovation Award; Inventor of the Year Award; the McLean Award; the First Prize in Technical Achievement of ASRM (American Society for Reproductive Medicine); and an NSERC E.W.R. Steacie Memorial Fellowship.
